The COLLET CHUCK (MLA-21) enables using 5C collets in a wide range of lathes. The backplate will accommodate mounting threads up to at least 2 1/4" diameter. The COLLET CHUCK (MLA-21) has only three main components: a body, backplate, and nut. There are no gears. Thus it can easily be made by the home machinist with a lathe. Collet insertion and removal is quick and easy. The large nut, given a spin, draws in the collet, which is then cinched tight with a tommy bar. Giving the nut a spin in the other direction removes the collet. The kit for making the chuck includes two ductile iron castings, 1144 "stressproof" steel for the nut, ball bearings, screws, drawings, and instructions. Currently, only drawings and machining instructions are available for purchase.
